New MTU Series 4000 Gen-Set Diesel Engines: Cleaner and More Powerful

  • MTU 20V4000 gen-set producing 3,250 kW is the largest output single engine high-speed generator available on the market
  • New Series 4000 12-, 16- and 20-cylinder gen-set engines are more powerful than their predecessors
  • Reduced NOX values for the new Series 4000 engines comply with U.S. EPA Tier 2 emission specifications using purely internal engine technology
  • New engines include the latest edition of ADEC electronic engine management system

DDC/MTU Power Generation introduces the newest version of the successful Series 4000 diesel engines for standby and prime power gen-set applications. The new engines are more powerful, cleaner and economical than their predecessors and include the latest MTU engine management systems. The engines will be available in 12-, 16- and 20-cylinder, 90-degree Vee-configuration designs for 50 and 60 Hz applications. Depending on cylinder configurations, the new engines will produce 1,750 kW, 2,250 kW or 3,250 kW. Overall, power performance increases 13% for 16-cylinder and 16% for 12- and 20-cylinder engines over the previous versions. With the 20V4000 now producing 3,250 kW, it continues to be the largest output single engine high-speed generator available on the market today.

To meet the more stringent demands of U.S. EPA Tier 2 emission specifications, the new Series 4000 engines utilize purely internal engine technology. The new combustion balance results in reduced NOX values and significant decreases in particulate emissions without any exhaust aftertreatments and no sacrifice in power or fuel consumption.Dispensing with exhaust aftertreatments and the additional sub-assemblies that go with them means a more compact footprint than its predecessors, leading to a higher power density package. This allows more power and increased fuel economy in the same amount of space, saving on costly and complicated installation alterations. The latest generation of MTU’s electronic management system, ADEC (Advanced Diesel Engine Control), represents a further significant advance incorporated into the new Series 4000 engines. Among other features, the ADEC unit has triple injection electronics which provide optimum control of the fuel injection process to ensure low-pollution and high-efficiency combustion. Additionally, the ADEC system allows remote scanning and internet read-out of engine data, such as number of operating hours.

For maintenance purposes, the data can be copied to another engine governor and when combined with MTU’s SAM (Service and Application Module) control unit, integration of MTU engines into a complete generation plant is streamlined.Production of the new Series 4000 engines are scheduled to be built in North America at the Redford, Mich., plant. DDC/MTU Power Generation now has products available for power generation applications from 20-3,250kW.

MTU Legend Series Goes Coast-To-Coast For 2007

MTU Detroit Diesel has announced that its popular Legend Series billfishing tournament-within-a-tournament will return in 2007 with an expanded line-up that stretches from coast to coast. The series was such a huge hit with East Coast sport fishing enthusiasts that the company has decided to make the 2007 series bigger and better by adding six more tournaments and including big game anglers on the west coast.

The tournaments included in the 2007 Legend Series are:

  • Missippi Gulf Coast Billfish Tournament (June 6-10 in Biloxi, MS)
  • Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament (June 6-10 in Morehead City, NC)
  • Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic at Sandestin (June 19-24 in Sandestin, FL)
  • Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina Billfish Tournament (June 27-30 in Charleston, SC)
  • Bermuda Billfish Blast (July 2-4 in Bermuda)
  • HMY / Viking Megadock (July 11-14 in Charleston, SC)
  • Bermuda Big Game Classic (July 11-15 in Bermuda)
  • Bay Point Billfish Invitational Tournament (July 11-15 in Panama City, FL)
  • White Marlin Open (August 5-11 in Ocean City, MD)
  • Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament (August 14-17 in Manteo, NC)
  • Mid-Atlantic $500,000 (August 19-24 in Cape May, NJ)
  • Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament (August 22-25 in Virginia Beach, VA)
  • Black & Blue Marlin Tournament (October 23-27 in Cabo San Lucas, MEX)

Last year’s series included seven of the most popular and prestigious sport fishing tournaments on the East Coast, from New Jersey to Florida. The expanded 2007 Legend Series will once again be presented by MTU Detroit Diesel and several of its authorized distributors and is open to any boat powered by an MTU or Detroit Diesel engine.

“The Legend Series is a unique tournament-within-a-tournament – a high end contest for high end boats and serious anglers.” said Steve Mazepink, MTU Detroit Diesel Marine Sales Manager, “This is really our way of demonstrating our commitment to the sport fishing community, plus it’s just a whole lot of fun.”

Anglers who accumulate the highest number of total points for their respective catches in this year’s 12 event schedule will be eligible for prizes awarded by MTU and series sponsors.  The grand prize, an all-expenses-paid luxury sport fishing trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, was won last year by William Burris of Palm Beach, Florida and the crew of his 60’ Bertram yacht, Melina.

Burris will be in very good company for the 2007 Legend Series when he and his fellow sportsman drop lines in this year’s Legend Series that now includes the West Coast finale in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament, which boasts the largest payout for any sport fishing competition in North America.

“It’s going to be more exciting, more fun and more rewarding for our customers than ever before,” promises Mazepink. “That’s really saying something, given the rave reviews from anglers who enjoyed last year’s series.”In addition to the customary MTU hospitality, Legend Series mobile displays at select events will boast interactive features like music, video and up-to-date electronic leader boards. There will also be a charity tie-in like last year benefiting The Billfish Foundation, a non-profit conservation group.

MTU 70′ Sport fishing Test Boat Reaches 50 Knots

The joint project between MTU Detroit Diesel and Jarrett Bay Boatworks that was developed last year to showcase MTU’s revolutionary new way of designing pleasure craft propulsion systems is once again making waves. Known as QED, a mathematical term signifying “the solution has been proven,” this process has enabled the test boat to reach 50.2 knots in its most recent sea trials.

That is an unheard-of achievement for a 98,000 lb., 70 feet long, sportfishing boat. The key was to take advantage of the benefits of the new Series 16V 2000 M93 engine which was designed from the ground up as a marine engine. It is far lighter in weight, more compact and more fuel efficient than other engines in its power class.

MTU’s goal was to work to optimize the performance of these engines for their customers. The idea was to ensure that the entire propulsion system, from the reduction gear ratio and propeller design was complementary to the manufacturer’s hull design.Matching the power and performance of MTU’s 16V 2000 M93 marine engines and using the QED performance improvement process to customize the propulsion system created a sportfisherman that can outperform anything on the water in terms of speed, fuel efficiency and control.

MTU Detroit Diesel, Inc. :New Company is Fomer Detroit Diesel Off-Highway Division

On January 1, 2006, the former Off-Highway division of Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) was spun off as a separate, new company: MTU Detroit Diesel, Inc. The division had already changed its name to “MTU Detroit Diesel” in January 2005, and had been operating as part of the DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway business unit. The new company is now a subsidiary of its former sister company MTU Friedrichshafen, headquartered in Germany.

The move prepared the way for MTU Detroit Diesel to be included in the sale of the former DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway (subsequently renamed the Tognum Group) to private equity firm EQT Partners in March.“We are tremendously excited about the direction we are headed,” said Ulrich Kemnitz, CEO of MTU Detroit Diesel, Inc. “MTU Detroit Diesel has experienced a lot of recent success, and I believe this move positions us to increase that momentum. And with the added investment in capital, research and development that EQT brings, we will be able to maintain our position as technology leaders and deliver even more value to our customers going forward.

MTU Detroit Diesel will retain its headquarters and manufacturing operations in Detroit, Michigan. Its sales and service network also remains unchanged, with 25 North American distributors serving the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Adds Kemnitz: “Our roots inDetroit stretch back to 1938, and we are proud to carry on the same heritage and tradition that has made both MTU and Detroit Diesel respected names in the off-highway engine and systems business.”
